Following a pattern! Seems good? This is what regular verbs do. This feature differentiates them from other types of verbs.

What are Regular Verbs?

Regular verbs are used in present and past tense and follow a pattern for conjugation while changing their pattern and conjugation.

Examples of regular verbs include ‘laugh,’ ‘play,’ ‘walk,’ ‘talk,’ ‘ask,’ ‘dance,’ ‘change,’ and ‘study.’

Regular Verb Example Sentences:

  • She opened the present yesterday.
  • He called me yesterday.
  • They clean their home every day.
  • She cooked rice last Sunday.
  • She played with him last evening.
  • Everyone laughed a lot at her jokes yesterday.
  • They walked to the market to buy groceries.
  • I have to cook before the guests arrive.
  • He wished her on her birthday.

Types of Regular Verbs

Following are the types of regular verbs.

Regular verbs in the Past Tense:

These generally end with ‘-ed.’ They show the actions that are completed.

For Example:

  • Walked
  • Laughed
  • Played
  • Talked
  • Studied

Example Sentences:

  • She liked the dinner.
  • He talked to his father.
  • She cooked pasta.
  • He baked cakes.
  • We learned languages.

Regular verbs in the Present Tense:

These don’t usually conjugate. Their spellings alter if they are used in the third-person singular. Add “s” at the end in this case.

For Example:

  • Walk
  • Laugh
  • Play
  • Talk
  • Study

Example Sentences:

  • I like the dinner.
  • She talks to her father.
  • She cooks pasta.
  • He bakes cake.
  • They study languages.

Regular verbs in Future Tense:

They generally end with auxiliary verbs.  Auxiliary verbs include will or shall.

For Example:

  • Will walk
  • Shall laugh

Example Sentences:

  • I will love the lunch if you’ll cook.
  • She will talk to her mother.
  • She will cook pasta today.
  • He will bake cakes.
  • We will learn languages.
